A HANDS-ON EXPERIENCE
At the core of the Student Media program is the belief that hands-on experience is the best career preparation. Our radio, magazine, newspaper and television outlets are student-led. To provide structure and mentorship, communications professionals are employed in our office as administrators and advisers. The best testament to the value of the Student Media experience is the success of our alumni, now employed as newsroom leaders, CEOs and anchors in major TV markets.
AN INVESTMENT IN YOUR FUTURE
At the conclusion of the work experience, we hope students will have gained a set of competencies that will help them succeed in any work environment, including:
Creativity: Thinking outside the box to communicate and overcome challenges
Communications: Sharing information in a variety of formats
Judgment and decision-making: Identifying key issues, gathering essential information and formulating a plan for action
Teamwork: Collaborating with diverse populations, from administrators to community members to student peers
Technological awareness: Using new technologies to meet communication goals

COMPENSATION
Students interested in radio, television and print typically begin as volunteers, where they learn basic media skills under the direction of more tenured students. Opportunities to earn academic credit for voluntary contributions can be pursued through practicums offered by the MSU Denver journalism and speech communications departments or, in some cases, through the Internship Center. Students who advance to leadership positions in radio, television and print may earn a monthly stipend for fulfillment of duties. Eligible students may receive compensation through the Federal Work-Study Program, if awarded funds through the Office of Financial Aid. Volunteer contributors who do not receive Work-Study may be eligible for an MSM “contributor incentive bonus.” Student Media also has a limited number of paid positions available in our administrative, advertising, creative and Web teams.
