Our mission

We prepare MSU Denver students for successful careers as communications professionals through the support of student-led multimedia outlets and the cultivation of a real-world learning environment.

Our values

We value and promote the student voice, diversity, community engagement and journalistic integrity through partnerships with members of the Auraria Campus and the Front Range community.

Our structure

We are a part of the division of Student Engagement and Wellness at MSU Denver, and receive support through student fees and revenue from advertising and underwriting.

Our Team

Director

Steve Haigh

Steve Haigh has more than 30 years of experience as a copy editor, page designer and Web editor. He spent 25 years with the Rocky Mountain News through its closing in 2009 and served as an MSU Denver affiliate journalism professor and academic adviser prior to accepting leadership of Student Media in 2010. A native of Kansas City, Mo., Mr. Haigh has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Missouri-Columbia. He married his wife, Pam, in 1984 and has two grown daughters, Kayla and Caroline, and two dogs, Dixie and Cooper.
Assistant Director

Marlena Hartz

Marlena Hartz has more than eight years of experience in higher education, newsroom and nonprofit settings. She received her master's degree in international and intercultural communications from the University of Denver in 2011 with fellowship support from the National Press Club. Prior to joining Student Media in 2011, Ms. Hartz administered the community service work program and off-campus employment at the University of Denver. She covered public affairs for daily newspapers in New Mexico and Texas and served as the assistant local news editor at the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal.
Production Manager

Kathleen Jewby

Kathleen Jewby’s love of art and publications started at a young age. Her obsession with design grew while she attended MSU Denver and worked as the editor of Metrosphere literary and arts magazine, winning Student Media its first Pacemaker award from the Associated Collegiate Press in 2007. She currently leads a team of student graphic designers as the Production Manager of Student Media. Ms. Jewby received a bachelor’s degree in fine arts with an emphasis in communication design and minors in philosophy and management from MSU Denver in 2007.
Office Manager

Elizabeth Norberg

As the first point of contact for the Office of Student Media, Elizabeth Norberg wears many hats. Depending on the moment, she may act as an office manager, accountant, secretary, adviser, mentor or parent to close to nearly one hundred students involved with Student Media each year. Ms. Norberg is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in modern languages with an emphasis in Spanish at MSU Denver.
Web Lead

Drew Jaynes

Drew is a so-called "Web native," having actively contributed to open source Web projects for the better part of 10 years. His diverse skill set has allowed him to work in many fields, including Web development, photojournalism, reporting, editing, consulting and more. As a student at MSU Denver, he worked for The Metropolitan student-led newspaper for three years. He earned his bachelor’s degree in photojournalism and communication theory from MSU Denver in 2010. He has led Student Media's Web team since 2010.
Assistant Production Manager

Colby Brumit

Colby Brumit studied graphic design and printmaking at MSU Denver from 2006-2010 and worked at Student Media while he earned a BFA in art. After graduating with honors, he returnted to Student Media as the assistant production manager. As an artist, he works in screenprinting, digital and mixed media, and is a full member of Edge Gallery.
